I love Isekai, it is a genre which has the flexibility of grass and the depth ranging from a puddle to an ocean, simply because this genre only provides the setting and story itself can be created as the author wants it to be. Hence Isekai provides the escape from the logic of our world and allows the author to construct the new world as a setting he wants with the context and relatedness of our world, allowing us viewers or readers to understand this new world with our protagonist. The idea of Isekai is simply brilliant and is fairly easy to write into than pure fantasy setting which demands greater suspension of disbelief from the audience. This takes me to allure Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken or simply “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” in English. The title says everything the anime actually is. I do love Japanese simplicity for giving names.
Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken is an anime about human reincarnating into another world as slime and yes he made sure that his hard-disk gets erased before he dies to save his face, which I would do as well. Then after being transported to another world with some convenient skills, location and a powerful friend he manages to win the loyalty of a goblin village and this is where true anime starts.
Have you ever played the strategy games? the most common would be Civilization, Total War and my favourites would be Rise of Nations, Settlers, Age of Empires, Pharaoh, Emperor rise of the middle kingdom and most importantly all the Paradox games and this anime reminds me of the strategy games I used to play and still play. There some sort of nostalgia attached to it at least on my part. There something about seeing a small village growing into a town, that town growing into a city, that city becoming a powerhouse in the surrounding region and finally the creation of a state around that city, most importantly everything is done inside your supervision. This is how historically nation-states formed.
It is the nature of humans to form societies, to form tribes and nations. It is also the nature of us to rule over those nations leading the people to prosperity and development, but most importantly cause the change to occur due to us, being an instrument of change. This simple desire to cause change and make decisions is what makes the strategy games so much enjoyable and that is what makes Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken so enjoyable.
A human who we can relate to is reincarnated to another world with a special power. He becomes de-facto leader of a village and causes a change in that society and basically transform them from a hunter-gatherer society into a medieval utopia all the while expanding his realm through diplomacy, expanding trade and finally creating a nation. Of course, many of these things hadn’t happened in the anime yet but they will soon as they happened in the manga(ps. Spoilers) and that what makes the Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken so unique in terms of all other Isekai. It is like Overlord but rather than focusing on characters and story, it focuses on change and advancement of a village and a nation along with its leader. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken certainly creates new dimensions in which this genre can be explored and love it for that.
